At Morgan Law Group, our auto accident attorneys in Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi know that intoxicated driving is a significant problem on our roadways year around. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 32 people in the United States die in drunk driving crashes every day. That is one person every 45 minutes.

Last year alone, 11,654 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths — a 14% increase from the previous year.

With such grim statistics, it is difficult to imagine that impaired driving accidents, injuries, and fatalities increase at certain times of the year. Unfortunately, it is true. Holidays increase these dangerous circumstances.

Drunk Driving is More Prevalent During the Holidays

In just over one week, during the Christmas and New Year periods last year, there were 209 drunk-driving-related fatalities in the U.S., according to the NHTSA.

In addition:

  • The period from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day sees an estimated 25,000 injuries from alcohol-related crashes.
  • 28% of fatal crashes in December involve drunk drivers.
  • Drunk drivers make up 40% of all fatal accidents between Christmas and New Year.
  • New Year’s Day is the deadliest day for alcohol-related crashes, with 58% of crashes being alcohol related.
  • New Year’s Day is the most dangerous day of the year for pedestrians.

Each of these injuries and fatalities was 100% preventable, as are the ones that will occur this year because of impaired drivers getting behind the wheel.

Holiday parties, family reunions, and friendly gatherings can all lead to excessive drinking, which directly correlates to the number of impaired driving crashes that occur in Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
