The index is intended to compare broad patterns and identify the combination of factors affecting different parts of North Carolina. It is not an official government ranking, a prediction that an accident or disaster will occur, or legal advice concerning a specific claim.

The numbered badges below reflect the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s 2024 ranking of cities with populations of at least 10,000. That transportation ranking evaluates reported crashes, crash severity, and crash rates based on population using crashes recorded from January 1, 2022, through December 31, 2024.
The broader North Carolina Danger Index also considers hurricanes, flooding, landslides, severe weather, property exposure, population growth, infrastructure, and insurance-recovery challenges. A city’s final composite risk may therefore differ from its traffic ranking.
